Peter Pronovost, MD, PhD, FCCM

Peter Pronovost, MD, PhD, FCCM is a practicing anesthesiologist and critical care physician, a lecturer, a patient safety researcher and leader.   He is a Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and Surgery in the School of Medicine, Nursing in the School of Nursing and Health Policy and Management in the Bloomberg School of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins University.  Dr. Pronovost is the Director of the Quality and Safety Research Group, Director of the Division of Adult Critical Care Medicine, Co-Director of the Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit and Medical Director for the Center for Innovation in Quality Patient Care at Johns Hopkins.  Dr. Pronovost holds a doctorate in clinical investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Pronovost has written more than 130 articles and chapters in the fields of patient safety, ICU care, quality health care and evidence-based medicine.  Nationwide, he is Chair of the ICU Advisory Panel for Quality Measures with JCAHO, Chair of the ICU Physician Staffing Committee for the Leapfrog Group, and is on the National Quality Forums Quality Measures Work Group.    He has won several national awards for his research including the 2004 John Eisenberg Patient Safety Research Award.

Dr. Pronovost is currently leading multiple large nationwide safety projects, funded by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.    He has developed innovative yet feasible tools to improve quality of care and patient safety that are being used by thousands of hospitals.
