Dennis D. Pointer has worked with over 450 hospitals and health systems, other non-profit organizations, commercial corporations and governmental agencies. His firm, Dennis D. Pointer & Associates specializes in governance retreat facilitation, design, development, consulting and assessment. Dr. Pointer is also Vice President and Partner of the American Governance and Leadership Group, LLC (sponsored by the American Hospital Association).
Dr. Pointer has served as a member/chairman of many boards, including: Daniel Freeman Hospitals; Health Insights, Inc.; Praxis Corporation; Network for Health Administration; CIS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ); and the American Board of Medical Specialties.
He is the author of six books including REALLY GOVERNING (Delmar, 1996) and BOARD WORK (Jossey-Bass 1999); both are winners of the James A. Hamilton Book of the Year Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives. His newest books GETTING TO GREAT: Principles of Health Care Organization Governance and THE HIGH PERFORMANCE BOARD were recently published by Jossey-Bass. He has written over 70 articles including: “Really Governing: What Type of Work Should Your Board Be Doing?” (Hospital and Health Services Administration); “Loosening the Gordian Knot of Governance in Integrated Health Care Delivery Systems” (Frontiers of Health Services Management); “The Challenges of Governing Integrated Health Care Systems” (Health Care Management Review).
Dr. Pointer is Austin Ross Professor of Healthcare Management, Department of Health Services, School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Washington. He has held two previous endowed chairs: the John J. Hanlon Professorship of Health Services Research and Policy, Graduate School of Public Health, San Diego State University (1991-2002); and the Arthur Graham Glasgow Chair of Health Services Management at the Medical College of Virginia (1986-1991). From 1975 to 1986 he was affiliated with the University of California, Los Angeles were he was: Associate Director, UCLA Medical Center; Professor and Chairman, Department of Health Services Management, School of Public Health; Professor, Anderson School of Management; and Professor of Psychiatry and Bio-Behavioral Sciences, School of Medicine. During his tenure at UCLA, he was a Senior Research Fellow at the RAND Corporation. Dr. Pointer has held faculty appointments at the University of Iowa, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the Baruch School of Management of the City University of New York, in addition to having served as Associate Director, Department of Teaching Hospitals, Association of American Medical Colleges.
Dr. Pointer is an honorary life member of the Healthcare Forum, a recipient of the Foster G. McGaw Medal of Excellence in Health Administration, Education and Research, and has been a Dozor Distinguished Visiting Professor of Medical Administration at Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva, Israel. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.
