Center for HealthCare Governance - Speaker

Peter McGinn, PhD

Dr. Pete McGinn is a highly regarded health care executive and consultant.  His background is unusually broad in that it includes senior management positions in both academic and community health care as well as high-level consulting in industries ranging from manufacturing to financial services, high tech, retail, and media.  He is able to apply lessons learned in other settings to issues emerging in the health care field.  Pete is known for an approach to leadership issues that is down-to-earth and engages executives and managers in discovering how to successfully face and meet challenges.

Before founding Leadership Impact, LLC in 2007, Pete served for seven years as CEO of United Health Services in Binghamton, NY.  At UHS, he guided the growth of a dynamic and sustainable organizational culture, building organizational vitality and employee commitment. Previously as a consultant for RHR International, Pete developed a practice that included executive evaluations, organizational assessments, and leadership training.  In addition to consulting, Pete has worked as vice president for human resources at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, as a staff member in the United States Senate, and as a hospital psychologist.

While at UHS, Pete continued to write and consult on a part-time basis, with engagements ranging from strategic planning and board retreats to facilitating a merger between two competing not-for-profit organizations.  Pete is the author of Leading Others, Managing Yourself published by Health Administration Press and Learning to Lead, a self-study course of the American College of Healthcare Executives.  He has also written articles on board leadership for Trustee magazine and on executive skills for Hospitals & Health Networks OnLine.  As a speaker, Pete uses a story-telling approach to involve listeners and encourage self-learning and reflection.

Pete has a Ph.D. in psychology from Johns Hopkins where he was one of the original researchers with the now-famous Hopkins study of gifted children.  He also holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Penn State.  Pete is past chair of HANYS, the Healthcare Association of NY State.  In 2007, he received the Distinguished Service Award from HANYS.
