Governance in Nonprofit Health Systems: An Initial Report on CEO Perspectives

Led by Lawrence D. Prybil, M.A., Ph.D., a professor of health management and senior advisor to the dean of the University of Iowa College of Public Health and former member of the AHA Board of Trustees, this report provides important insights into the governance of local not-for-profit hospital systems and will be of interest to both health care system and community leaders alike.

The report focuses on three important areas of health care governance: board structure and composition; board practices and processes; and board culture. It seeks to identify areas where governance could be improved and to provide information that will assist the systems’ chief executive officers and board leaders in assessing and enhancing the boards’ effectiveness.

This report “adds to the growing body of information that boards can turn to in their on-going assessment and guidance of hospital systems,” said AHA President and CEO Rich Umbdenstock. “Boards today have growing responsibilities and reports like this one help identify areas where progress is being made and also highlights areas for improvement.”
