Board-Medical Staff Relations Survey Now in the Field
|
Center Resources
|
|
The Center for Healthcare Governance and the Health Research & Educational Trust are pleased to announce that an online topical survey dealing with the increasingly important issue of Board–Medical Staff Relations is currently in the field. The current survey builds on the success of recent Center/HRET governance surveys on the topics of executive sessions and trustee demographics.
For the Board–Medical Staff survey, the Center and HRET are teaming up with Integrated Healthcare Strategies (IHS), a leading health care consulting firm. The survey was sent to board members, CEOs, and CMOs across the country last Wednesday, April 9, and will be in the field for the remainder of the month.
The survey includes 14 questions designed to collect information about current practices regarding board engagement with physicians and non-physician clinical staff, including:
- The criteria used to select physician candidates for the board (ex-officio status, election status, or specific expertise);
- The primary criterion used to differentiate between qualified physician candidates who do not hold an ex-officio position and are not elected by the medical staff (political affiliation, community knowledge, clinical expertise, business knowledge, prior board experience, etc.);
- Board actions, engagements, and authorizations with the physician staff around issues including quality and patient safety, administration, reimbursement, and strategic planning; and
- Board attendance and participation in medical staff meetings, educational events, and planning and assessment activities.
The Center, HRET, and IHS will produce a monograph, to be available online later this year, based on survey results and other resources. This monograph will discuss current Board–Medical Staff relationships and identify behaviors exhibited by boards and leadership who are committed to developing a healthy culture with their physicians. The Center, HRET, and IHS also will conduct a roundtable discussion on the findings of the study at the AHA/Health Forum Summit this July.
If you are a board member, CEO, or CMO, and have not yet had a chance to respond to this survey, you can do so by following the link below.

New Publications from the Center!
|
|
Remember to check for two new Center publications in this
month's issue of Trustee
magazine. The April issue includes a Center Voices column on modernizing
board communications, as well as a new Trustee Workbook on governance and
hospital performance improvement.
April's
Center Voices column on modernizing board communications is authored by Joe
Ruck, CEO of Center member BoardVantage, a provider of secure, hosted board
portals. In addition to discussing the increasing use of electronic
communication by hospitals and their boards, the column highlights the
advantages of adopting a board portal for trustee communications (including
easy access to information, secure email capability, reduced risk of
litigation and ability to store and retrieve historical documents) and
features an account of one hospital's success in streamlining delivery and
access to board meeting agendas and supporting materials.
The Center's
second Trustee Workbook of the year is co-authored by Center faculty and
consultants Mary Totten and Jamie Orlikoff, health care executive Kathy
McDonagh, and Jean Chenoweth, health care researcher and senior vice
president for Thomson Healthcare Performance Improvement and the 100 Top
Hospitals Programs. The workbook, which focuses on governance and hospital
performance improvement, summarizes qualitative research interviews with
hospital CEOs and board chairs in five organizations, including community
and rural hospitals, system members and academic medical centers. The
workbook discusses how governance responsibilities, such as board
self-evaluation and CEO evaluation are conducted, and how performance
improvement is monitored and overseen by these organizations and their
boards. The workbook also addresses aspects of board culture, such as the political
and strategic nature of the board, and their implications for the board's
impact on hospital performance improvement.

Voices and Trustee
Workbooks, via the Center's Web site, under the Publications menu!
