Earlier this year, Center for Healthcare Governance members received the report of the Blue Ribbon Panel on Health Care Governance, "Building an Exceptional Board: Effective Practices for Health Care Governance."

Panel members included chief executives and board members of hospitals and health care systems, governance researchers and consultants and others with expertise in leadership and governance. They identified and focused their deliberations on areas they believed were critical to effective governance.

The Center is proud to have participated in and to have helped fund the panel’s efforts. We have now made the tools and resources from the panel’s report available on our Web site free to download and know you will find the report a valuable resource in your board’s journey toward exceptional governance.

All of the BRP downloads are PDFs. Please download a free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader if necessary.

The Center would also like to share with the field additional tools and resources on its Web site that boards have found useful in improving their governance processes. As a first step in expanding upon the panel’s governance improvement resources, we are asking Center members to share governance tools and resources that they have found effective. Examples might include performance dashboards, orientation and board member recruiting approaches or resources, sample board policies and procedures, board member expectations, board member or leader job descriptions, board meeting evaluation tools or any other resources your board had found to be helpful.

Please email your submissions to info@americangovernance.com and indicate that you are contributing your tools and resources for use on the Center Web site. Thank you in advance for sharing with other boards what you have learned about how to make good governance even better!

The Center for Healthcare Governance presents its winter Symposium on governing and leading health care organizations. In this three-day program at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton Naples, trustees and executive leadership will gain insights into the trends that are dictating reform and learn strategies and tools for navigating this increasingly complex environment.

In plenary sessions, industry experts will offer analyses of the contextual issues framing the health care environment – from rising expectations for transparency and accountability, to shifts in health care financing, to the transformation of health care into a digital industry and new expectations for creating sustainable organizational cultures. In small group, interactive sessions, we’ll focus on emerging models and innovative strategies for honing governance oversight capacity. Your board will enhance its ability to promote quality improvement, assess risk, and inspire organizational excellence.

Consider arriving early to enjoy the weekend in Naples and register for the Sunday afternoon pre-conference workshop. Newer trustees especially will benefit from this intensive session focused on what it means – conceptually and practically – to be a fiduciary under the law.
