Microgovernance: A New Role for Boards

A Conversation with James E. Orlikoff. Moderated by Mary K. Totten

Microgovernance: A New Role for Boards features an interview with James E. Orlikoff, Senior Consultant to the Center and National Advisor on Governance and Leadership to the American Hospital Association. He discusses microgovernance-a new approach to board work that will help hospital and system boards govern successfully and manage risk as regulatory and market forces intensify. In this program Orlikoff discusses the environmental forces that are compelling boards to govern at levels of detail previously considered inappropriate. He talks about how microgovernance fits with more traditional modes of governing and the impact it will have on board practices such as orientation, education and evaluation. Orlikoff outlines steps boards can take with both the CEO and the medical staff to ensure they microgovern effectively. He also talks about common pitfalls in microgoverning and how boards can void them.

This program can be used by boards, executives and governance support staff and includes:

  • a 23-minute interview with James E. Orlikoff;
