Using Trustee Competencies to Improve Board and Organizational Performance
A Conversation with Rick de Filippi. Moderated by Mary K. Totten
Using Trustee Competencies to Improve Board and Organizational Performance describes the work of the Blue Ribbon Panel on Trustee Core Competencies. The program features an interview with Rick de Filippi, chair of the panel, chair-elect of the AHA Board of Trustees and a trustee of the Cambridge Health Alliance in Massachusetts. He discusses the importance of trustee competencies for effective governance and reviews two sets of trustee competencies-knowledge and skills competencies and personal capability competencies-developed by the panel for use by hospital and system boards. The program discusses how competencies can be used in a variety of board practices, including trustee selection and performance evaluation, and reviews panel recommendations for activities that need to be undertaken to help hospital and system boards use trustee competencies in their work.
This program can be used by boards, executives and governance support staff and includes:
-
a 16-minute interview with Rick de Filippi;
-
a set of Power Point slides, including discussion questions, that accompanies the interview;
-
a facilitation guide that describes program components and provides suggestions for how to use them; and
-
an evaluation form that solicits feedback on the program and allows participants to indicate additional information they would like to receive about the program topic.
