Overview:

The Center for Healthcare Governance presents its fall Symposium on governing and leading health care organizations. In this three-day program at the InterContinental Boston, trustees and executive leadership will gain insights into the trends that are dictating reform and learn strategies and tools for navigating this increasingly complex environment.

In plenary sessions, industry experts will offer analyses of the contextual issues framing the health care environment - from rising expectations for transparency and accountability, to shifts in health care financing and demands for cost reduction, to the likely impact of the presidential election and emerging opportunities for engaging physicians in clinical transformation. In small group, interactive sessions, we'll focus on innovative models and strategies for honing governance oversight capacity. Your board will enhance its ability to promote quality improvement, assess performance risk, and inspire organizational excellence.

You'll also learn how great leaders manage for conflict and consensus with Professor Michael Roberto who has studied the organizational and interpersonal decision-making dynamics that cause large-scale failures to occur (such as the Columbia Space Shuttle accident and the 1996 Mount Everest tragedy). You'll gain valuable insights on how to get the most from your leadership teams, make strategic decisions more effectively, and build the consensus that successful implementation requires.

Consider arriving early to enjoy the fall color in New England and register for the Sunday pre-conference workshop. This new Center offering is designed to increase trustees' quality literacy and their effectiveness in guiding the improvement of quality and clinical performance in their hospitals and health systems. Participants will learn how to identify and use the levers of effective governance to advance the quality agenda and motivate optimal quality performance.

By attending the Symposium, the leaders of your organization will acquire new knowledge and skills to help fulfill the intent of governance reform - the development of boards that are more informed about both the industry and their organizations, more attuned to their overall governance responsibilities, and more prepared to engage in active and appropriate oversight. You will learn to ask the tough questions, obtain the information you need to govern effectively, and hold your board and your organization accountable for improved performance.
