Healthcare is at the eye of the convergence of massive and unprecedented demographic, economic, technological, and social forces. As the industry enters this brave new world, new mental models of governance will be required to effectively lead health care organizations into the future. Directors need to be current in both the health care industry and in the practice of governance in order to do their jobs well. This presentation offers an overview of present day, as well as emerging trends and will examine the new demands that they place on governing boards.

In this age of governance reform, health care boards are finding that they are not only being held accountable for financial performance but for the patient’s care and the community’s benefit. These expanded roles require a greater understanding of the elements of quality care and patient safety, the development of the board’s quality literacy and the relationship of the board’s leadership and organizational clinical excellence. Trustees are learning that it’s not only the right thing to do, it’s the pathway to competing successfully in the future. What’s the role of a governing team that is not directly involved in the clinical side of the business? This discussion offers suggestions about setting the organizational tone, selecting the “right” indicators to measure progress, and numerous other factors to which the board should be attentive.

Healthcare directors are dependent on physicians to carry out many of their strategies; the same physicians who are increasingly being drive nin to some level of competition with the systems governed by the directors. This presentation discusses appropriate ways for the directors to involve themselves insetting an organizational tone that fosters healthy relationships with physicians.

Board Committee Structures and Annual Goal Setting for Boards

A proven method to improve the performance of aboard is to boost the contribution the board’s committees make to its work. This session will cover the principles of effective committee design, discuss how to decide what committee structure is appropriate for your board and demonstrate how to plan the work of committees and coordinate their efforts with the goals of the board.

Participants will learn the importance of having a process for self-assessment and how the results can produce action plans that can greatly improve trustee development and the overall effectiveness of the board.
