Overview:
Are you new to the hospital board or looking to better define your role as a board member?
At this 1 1/2-day conference, participants will discover the governance practices that help boards to run most effectively, the critical issues facing health care, and the skills and competencies needed to meet the specific roles and duties of the board. First-term and newer trustees will acquire new knowledge to help them fulfill their roles on the board, enabling them to become more informed about their organizations, more aware of their governance responsibilities and better prepared to engage in active and productive oversight while serving as a hospital trustee. Participants will find this conference instrumental in building a solid foundation for effective governance.
This conference will cover five key areas:
-
The Context of Health Care
Expert faculty will offer analysis of the constantly evolving field of healthcare, including the massive changes in our health care system, the rising expectations for quality and patient safety, payers and payment mechanisms, new uses of information technology, and current trends and predictions for the future. Participants will gain a better understanding of the health care environment, the critical issues affecting their roles as trustees, and the impact these issues have on hospitals and their governing boards.
-
The Role of the Health Care Trustee
Your board accomplishes its work through the roles developed for each of its trustees. Knowing your role and what’s expected on the job will help you to better relate to fellow board members, the CEO, medical staff and other members of the executive/clinical leadership team. Conference faculty will help you to recognize the importance of having specific job descriptions developed for each member of the board.
-
Building Board Engagement: Structuring to Accomplish the Board’s Work
Is your board structured to make efficient decisions? Are its agendas organized to best use the time and the talents of its trustees? Learn how effective board leadership and the development of a governance plan will enable your organization to create a board structure that keeps its members engaged so that the board can accomplish its work most productively.
-
Skills and Competencies of Effective Health Care Trustees
Because the composition of a board can have a huge impact on its function, board members should be chosen using criteria that take into account the needs of the board and the many possible contributions from its members. Conference participants will gain an appreciation for the talents, experiences, and other attributes that are most important to their role on a hospital board.
-
Governance Assessment: Improving Board Performance
Participants will learn about the value of and process for conducting regular board self-assessments that result in action plans that will greatly improve trustee development and the overall effectiveness of the board. You’ll see how a well-designed governance assessment can have a greater impact within your organization.
