2007 Foster G. McGaw Prize

The Center offers its congratulations to Harborview Medical Center of Seattle, which has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious 2007 Foster G. McGaw Prize.

Sponsored by the American Hospital Association (AHA), The Baxter International Foundation and the Cardinal Health Foundation, the $100,000 prize is presented annually to a health care organization whose innovative programs significantly improve the health and well being of the surrounding community. Harborview Medical Center was selected for its involvement in providing health care and other services to the homeless, immigrant communities, mentally and chronically ill, and children.

"As a mission driven, public teaching hospital, the core values of Foster G. McGaw are aligned closely with our work. This award is a tremendous honor for Harborview because it reflects our role in embracing the community and reaching out to those most in need," said Johnese Spisso, interim executive director, Harborview Medical Center and vice president for medical affairs and clinical operations officer, University of Washington Medicine. "With the unwavering support of the Harborview Board of Trustees, King County and the University of Washington, Harborview's community initiatives benefit thousands of individuals each year by removing barriers to accessing high-quality care and improving health status."

2007 Gallup Great Workplace Award Winner - St. Joseph Health System

Center member St. Joseph Health System in Orange, CA, was recently one of 12 organizations worldwide to receive the 2007 Gallup Great Workplace Award. The award recognizes organizations for their extraordinary ability to create an engaged workplace culture. Winners were selected based on their employees' responses to a Gallup survey.

"To say we are honored to receive this award is an understatement," said Deborah Proctor, president and CEO of St. Joseph Health System. "The credit goes to our employees for their commitment to our mission, vision and values. At St. Joseph Health System, we value all of our employees and the personal contributions each of them makes to our organization. Especially for Me - Mercy Medical Center – Cedar Rapids, Iowa

The most common side effects of breast cancer treatment are weight gain and fatigue – for which there are no medications or quick fixes. Center member Mercy Medical Center has developed a proactive way of helping cancer survivors deal with these side effects called Especially for Me. The free 12-week program consists of a guided exercise plan with a personal health coach, one-on-one consultations with a clinical dietician and occupational therapist as well as small group educational sessions with various members of the health care team.

AHA NOVA Award Winners Announced - Legacy Health System

The American Hospital Association (AHA) recently awarded the AHA NOVA Award to six hospital-led programs that improve community health by extending help to low-income and uninsured children and adults, the chronically ill and racial and ethnic minorities. Center member Legacy Health System was one of the recipients of the AHA NOVA AWARD.

Program - Trauma Nurses Talk Tough (TNTT)
Legacy Health System, Portland, Oregon

TNTT was founded more than 20 years ago by trauma nurses who decided they needed to act proactively to prevent the injury and death of young people making high-risk decisions. The program successfully combines legislation, school education, court-ordered classes, family programs and community events, and has been replicated throughout the country.
